Aikoku Maru was the second Hokoku Maru-class cargo-passenger ship built by the Excellent Shipbuilding Subsidy Facility for military use. It was completed as a cargo-passenger ship on August 31, 1941, but was requisitioned by the Navy the following day and converted into a special purpose cruiser. Aikoku Maru formed the 24th Squadron with Hokoku Maru and engaged in commerce raiding operations.
