Shigaraki ware is pottery produced in Shigaraki Town, a mountain village in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. One of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, it has a history of over 1,200 years and was designated a traditional craft by the government in 1976 (Showa 51). These pottery pieces, with their varied shapes and expressions, are the product of nature and artisanship, and are filled with the sincerity and playfulness of masters who value "imbalance." The "Hechimon" (registered trademark) comes from a Shigaraki artisan's word meaning "unusual things."
