Product Introduction
Pit-Road 1/700 Skywave Series Japanese Navy Aircraft Carrier Chiyoda Plastic Model W256
Like its sister ship, Chitose, Chiyoda was initially completed in 1938 as a seaplane carrier, with consideration given to later conversion to an aircraft carrier. Chiyoda was subsequently converted into a Type 1000 kaiten (largest class) carrier. Following the loss of four aircraft carriers in the Battle of Midway in 1942, the decision was finally made to convert both ships into aircraft carriers. They were completed in December of the following year as light aircraft carriers carrying 30 aircraft. After conversion, the ship served as a convoy escort, participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June of the following year, and was sunk by U.S. cruiser gunfire during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October, despite futile anti-aircraft gun fire.
