The frigate Nuestra Señora de la Mercedes was a 34-gun ship of the Spanish Navy, built in Havana in 1788.
It left Montevideo on August 9, 1804, loaded with gold, silver, copper, tin, vicuña wool, Peruvian bark and cinnamon, but was sunk by a British ship on its return journey.
In May 2007, about 200 years after the sinking, the American underwater exploration company Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the Mercedes using advanced sonar. They then operated an underwater robot from the ocean to salvage the Mercedes' sunken treasure.
The 500,000 silver coins and gold pieces minted in Lima, Peru, make it the largest sunken treasure hoard ever recovered. Part of the recovered treasure is now on display at the National Museum in Cartagena.
The historic Spanish frigate comes to life in a modern-day model sailing ship.
[Notes common to all wooden models made overseas]
Foreign wooden kits have a different feel to Japanese plastic models and kits.
It might be easier to understand if I explain it as being similar to woodworking or art.
Most of the works of advanced craftsmen start from kits, but add details to pursue the unique beauty of sailing ships, and modify them into wonderful works. The real pleasure of this hobby is in creating your own unique works through such ingenuity in the production process and making your own parts that you don't like (because they are made of wood, it is surprisingly easy to modify them).
Even beginners can build it with patience, but we recommend that you research the quality, how to enjoy it, how to assemble it, etc. on the Internet and choose a kit that suits your skill level. Even if you are familiar with Japanese kits, we recommend that you start with a beginner's kit.
In addition, our shop also offers sailing ship model sets for beginners, which are overseas kits that are more in line with the sensibilities of Japanese people and come with DVDs and materials.
