[About Mediterranean Coral]

This species of coral is harvested along the Mediterranean coast. It is a red coral, but it is a different species from the red coral found in Japanese waters. It is a matte coral with little transparency, and its color is slightly brownish red compared to red coral. Unlike red coral, it does not have white fringes, and even when processed into beads, it does not show white fringes. Therefore, it is often processed into items such as necklaces and bracelets, where the entire bead is visible.

Generally, coral processed into gemstones is the polished bony shaft produced by coral organisms. Corals are in the same family as jellyfish and sea anemones, and are divided into the subclasses Hexacorallia and Octocorallia depending on the number of tentacles on the polyps. There are two types of both hexacorals: hard corals, which have a solid axis, and soft corals, which do not. Because the axis of hexacorals is brittle, octocorals are used as gemstones. However, most soft corals do not have a solid axis, and only a few of these types are fashioned into gemstones.

Overseas, coral is also worn as a talisman for safe childbirth and for the healthy growth of children.
